White quartz: A hard core with a bright surface

 

White quartz is quartz which has slightly been calcined. A quartz core is coated by a shell of cristobalite. This gives the grains of white quartz the stability of quartz and the optical whiteness of cristobalite. The individual grains have a rough surface.
